Does Motion Matter?
We know from firsthand experience at our flight training laboratory, Skyport, that motion does matter, and for some less than obvious reasons. Pilots that learn primary flight skills in a device that provides accurate motion feedback transition to the real aircraft in less time because they know what it “feels like” to fly. They are less anxious in the cockpit, have better touch on the controls, and know why you need right rudder in the climb. Interestingly, having a full motion simulator might be even more important for the flight school. At the end of the day, a flight school is a business that lives or dies by how many new customers it can acquire and how many current customers it can keep. A simulator equipped with our motion system has proven to be a huge marketing and customer retention advantage for the hundreds of schools that operate one. When someone talks about a simulator, the fact that “it doesn’t feel like the real thing” almost always comes up. While that might not be a big deal when you’re teaching instrument procedures, this lack of “feel” turns most devices into a paper weight when you try to teach basic aircraft handling. The primary culprit of “simulator feel” is the traditional spring-loaded yoke system that has been the industry standard since the 1940’s. We’ve known that force feedback systems are the answer to this problem, but these systems have been hugely expensive and delicate components that aren’t even an option on most general aviation training devices … until now.
The Redbird Control Loading system is a mechanically simple, inexpensive force feedback system that takes the realism of your simulator experience to a completely new level. Control Loading is without doubt the most valuable upgrade you can make to your Redbird training device. Whether you’re a student pilot or instructor, Insight provides valuable information to enhance the flight instruction process. With Redbird Insight, an instructor can monitor a training session from outside the simulator. They can view the flight from a variety of angles, both inside and outside the aircraft and record the flight for playback during a debriefing session.
Insight integrates with the Redbird line of flight simulators to render the outside view of the aircraft, a live video feed from the inside view of the cockpit and cockpit instrumentation onto an external display. Redbird Corvus - $599
Corvus connects your Redbird simulator to ForeFlight (more EFB connections are in the works) by providing data akin to an ADS-B receiver. In addition to representing own-ship position of simulated aircraft, Corvus also broadcasts attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS) information as well as Traffic Information Services-Broadcast (TIS-B) data. Select Flight Information Services-Broadcast (FIS-B) functionality, such as weather and airspace information, are currently in development and will be available in future updates.
